Lost Cats

We know how stressful it is to have a lost family member. This information may aid you in finding your pet.

****If you are missing a cat PLEASE regularly check the SPCA in case your cat has been taken there****

Here are some suggestions on how to go about finding your cat

Contact all your local vets, Cats Protection League and the SPCA with a good description of your cat. Send a photo if you can. It can also help to call the SPCA back regularly.

Put up posters with a photo of your cat at local shops. Posters with a colour photo will probably get the best results and more notice. Put flyers in all the letterboxes in the neighbourhood and go door-knocking. Ask everyone to check their sheds/garages/under-house storage areas.

In the evening try  going out and calling your cat  it’s quieter at night so they are more likely to hear you calling. They may also be too scared to come out during the day.

List your pet on Pets On The Net, Trade MeBuy Sell & Exchange, Sella and check through the listings of found pets. Also try posting on the Pets and Animals  message board on Trade Me some lucky people have been reunited with their pets through the message board

Placing an ad in the local newspaper never under estimate how far a scared or undesexed cat can travel. Even advertising at the end of your driveway by your letter box is another option

There are things you can do to give you the best chance to be reunited with your cat if they get lost. A safety collar and ID tag with your contact details on it, please make sure the collar is on correctly tight enough your cat cant get their leg stuck through it but not too tight to cause discomfort.

Thankfully a lot more cats are now being microchipped. Your contact details are entered in to the NZCAR which gives shelters, vets and the SPCA to contact you if someone brings in your cat. Please always make sure you update your details on the database if you move house or change any of your contact numbers.
